CHECK THIS OUT....

SPARKLE THE DESIGNER CAT

Just discovered a really cool blog n'more site, that's well worth taking the time to check out. Sparkle is a gorgeous Somali cat and she's been busy! On site she offers her diary, cat-to-cat advice, book reviews, special cat articles and... of course her own designer cat store. She's even got her own line of 2010 calenders! 12 of them, in fact, with intriguing titles such as "Human Advice, Destructive, No Declaw, Somali Cat, No Bad Cats" and more, something for everyone we're sure. Further investigation into the site reveals that Sparkle's human, while obviously well-trained, is not in fact a "weirdo cat fanatic" but rather someone with other interests, and a published author as well. We'd like to add that she's done a really professional job with Sparkle's site, and provided readers with an attractive, user-friendly and interesting addition to the online cat community. Check it out at:

An Excellent Film That Will Inform and Inspire

CAT CITY: A FILM BY JUSTINE PIMLOTT

If you missed the premier on Global National TV in October, you can still see this amazing work from Red Queen Productions.

"On any given night in Toronto it is estimated that over 100,000 lost, abandoned and feral cats roam the city streets. Never spayed or neutered these cats produce thousands of offspring adding to the burgeoning number of homeless pets.

For years, euthanizing unwanted animals has been seen as a viable solution by animal control agencies to deal with cat overpopulation. Now cat rescue groups, shelter workers and humane societies alike are calling for a stop to the needless killing of healthy, adoptable animals and are demanding humane alternatives.

Cat City takes the viewer into the heart of the issue of cat overpopulation by going to the frontlines of the crisis in Canada, following grassroots activists, shelter workers and independent cat rescuers as they work to rescue these lost and abandoned animals.

What does it tell us about our society when an animal becomes as disposable as a pop can?"

Indeed. I saw Cat City on TV, but I'm going to buy a copy of the DVD now. It will make me cry, but at the same time it will inspire me to try to be like the people in the film, doing what they can to the best of their abilities and truly making a difference.

For The Ethical and Humane Treatment of Feral Cats:

Loving The Feral Soul Inc.

For over a decade Jean Boileau has dedicated his life to rescuing and caring for feral cats, and he's gathered a wealth of information, experience and resources into this website. One of the reasons I bookmarked this site after going through it is because he exposes the many myths and prejudices against ferals to be untrue. Armed with the information he provides, I am better prepared to defend these "dangerous, destructive and dirty" creatures, as I have heard them described many times. They are not, in fact, responsible for a decline in songbird populations. They avoid contact with humans and pose zero threat to anyone. There are many simple yet effective ways to improve their lives, and prevent them from futher suffering.

Further, Mr. Boileau recognizes and makes an effort to define for the rest of us the beauty, grace and dignity to be found if one takes the time to become familiar with a feral colony. While pointing out that these "wild" cats are simply a consequence of human irresponsibility, neglect and cruelty, he underlies that their survival is due to their amazing resiliance, intelligence and social family bonds... qualities that we should admire and foster, rather than dismiss or destroy.

If you have feral cats in your neighbourhood (pretty much guaranteed you do) take a minute to visit this site and either gain a new perspective, or strenghen the one you already have on these often misunderstood and ill-treated souls.

Feral Shelters info from Hundred Cat Foundation

Here's some good advice from the amazing Hundred Cat Foundation:

"If you are caring for feral cats and are concerned about them having adequate shelter over the winter, please consider making them an insulated shelter as shown below. Feel free to email us for directions, dimensions or any other questions you have. Your shelter should be filled with straw not blankets, towels or pillows because they those items hold moisture & freeze. Straw does not hold the moisture and acts as an insulator."

http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/hundredcats.html

Check out their web site through this link, there's excellent pictures that show you exactly how to build one (or more) of these shelters. Very simple, cheap and effective! While you're there, take a minute to read about what else they do. Their Feed the Ferals program is wonderful and worth supporting. These people are very open and helpful regarding sharing information about how to care for ferals, if you have some living near you and want to help but aren't sure what to do... check with them.
